Engineers are professionals who develop solutions to technical problems through scientific and mathematical models. Everything we see around us is developed by people who engage in different kinds of engineering. Unlike other sciences, engineering is focused on practicality and the application of theoretical subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics. There are a number of different kinds of engineering that one can opt for a career in.
1) Nuclear engineers, or nuclear scientists as they are commonly referred to as, involve themselves with the development of various systems and processes that help enhance the efficiency that can be attained while harnessing nuclear energy. Their day-to-day work normally involves finding solutions for the operation of nuclear plants, disposal of nuclear waste and development of radiotherapy to diagnose and cure various illnesses.
2) Civil engineers are responsible for designing, constructing, operating and maintaining various structures that we commonly see around us. These include, but are not limited to buildings, bridges, roads and dams. Among the various different kinds of engineering, civil engineering is considered the second-oldest in nature, shortly following military engineering.
3) Agricultural engineering is a discipline of engineering that focuses on providing scientific solutions to problems that are commonly experienced in the world of agriculture and crop-growing. It is believed that from the various kinds of engineering out there, agricultural engineering is probably the most holistic since it takes into account knowledge from biological, chemical, civil and mechanical engineering.
4) Chemical engineering involves the designing and creating of equipment that facilitates the large-scale manufacturing of chemicals. Amongst all the different kinds of engineering out there, this discipline draws most extensively on the theories of chemistry. Chemical engineers focus their energies to ensure that chemical reactions in various production processes are as efficient as they can be. These engineers are employed by various secondary sector industries across the world.
5) Electrical engineers are responsible for developing, designing, supervising and testing the construction of electronic and electrical equipment including motors that run on electricity, lighting solutions, communication systems and broadcast systems. Most electrical engineers, however, find themselves working on finding effective solutions to issues relating to power generation, transmission and control. One of the many kinds of engineering that is increasingly related to this discipline is sustainable “green” design engineers.
6) Biomedical engineering is focused towards applying technological and scientific principles to the world of medicine and biology. The growth of biomedical engineering has been unprecedented since a lot of government funds are diverted towards this discipline. Biomedical engineers come up with real life solutions to problems faced by doctors and health technicians. These professionals often design equipment that is used in hospitals all over the world.
7) Computer hardware engineering is one of many kinds of engineering that has grown exponentially over the past couple of decades. These professionals are involved in research, testing, design and maintenance of computer hardware. This includes, but is not limited to computer chips, keyboards, printers, scanners, circuit boards and computer systems. Most computer hardware engineers do not develop computer software.
